Instructional Unit in Spanish or English.
Running Time: 26 min.
Intermediate/Advanced Level
Year: 2009
The traditional pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela
called the “Camino Francés” has been followed by millions
of pilgrims for almost one thousand years. However, few
people know that there was an older road further to the
north used between the 9th and 11th centuries to avoid
contact with the Moors who occupied much of Spain at that
time. After a brief review of the history of Santiago (St.
James), we are going to begin our pilgrimage in the city of
Le Puy-en-Velay, following one of the four main pilgrimage
roads in France to Vitoria in north central Spain. We follow
the route of Bishop Gotescalco who, in the year 950, left Le
Puy en route to Santiago de Compostela. We follow him to
Conques, Cahors, and Moissac, stopping in each place to
visit churches and monasteries of interest. We cross into
Spain near Roncesvalles, site of the famous battle that
inspired the French epic poem “La Chanson de Roland.”
We then visit Pamplona, home of San Fermín and continue
through the Basque country to Vitoria again stopping along
the way to visit many historic towns and villages whose
origin often dates from Roman times. The second part of
the pilgrimage, available on another DVD, will then take us
to Santiago de Compostela.
