CARNAVAL EN CAJAMARCA (Spanish Version)
|

Instructional Unit in Spanish or English.
Running Time: 30 min.
Intermediate/Advanced Level
Year: 2002.
We journey to the city of Cajamarca in northern Peru to
witness their exciting celebration of Carnival. First we learn
about some of the historical places in and around the city.
We visit Cumbemayo, a rural region filled with pre-Incan
history. Of special interest is the ancient canal which
brought water from the mountains to the city. We also visit
Otuzco and Combayo and the ancient burial sites carved
into the side of the mountains. In Cajamarca we see the
ransom room which Atahualpa filled with gold and silver
hoping to gain his freedom. Colonial Cajamarca is
especially beautiful with its lovely churches and mansions.
We also visit places where arts and crafts of the region
are produced. We observe the wild abandon of Carnival in
Cajarmarca with its colorful processions and parades.
